At the gateway to the Cévennes, the Hérault gorges offer various canoe and kayak routes, from the simplest to the most technical. The upper part of the gorges, close to the Gard department, offers a dynamic descent particularly suited to a sporting public.

It is between Ganges and Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois that the main difficulties are concentrated. Lovers of strong sensations will be delighted; alternate between rapids, eddies, waves, etc. Let yourself slide down the river at full speed and enjoy an unforgettable experience.

By canoe or kayak, go down at your own pace and in autonomy. Indeed, this sporting course is carried out without supervision, navigate in all tranquillity with your family or your friends.

Description of Canoe sport route

This sporty canoeing trip promises impressive passages in the Hérault gorges. You will love the steep landscape where the water has cut a path through the rock, a breathtaking sight. You will have to cross more difficult sections such as a slide, a big S and a small S, the stake, etc. Ready for the challenge?

Let yourself be carried away by the river and surpass your limits. This sporty itinerary will allow you to discover all the subtleties of canoe and kayak navigation. Embark on a solo or duo trip down the Hérault river and create unforgettable memories!

The other advantage of this trip? The possibility of requesting supervision. The basic course is unsupervised and participants can navigate the course on their own. If you would like to be accompanied by an instructor who is a canoeing specialist and an expert on the region, this is entirely possible. We will be happy to make you a proposal. We have one guide for every 12 people, so don’t hesitate to choose this alternative for your groups.

Schedule of the day

The sporty canoe trip starts in Laroque and lasts a total of 2 hours.

Get on board and prepare for a thrill. You will start with the descent of the Laroque slide and then pass through small rapids. As the water flows, you’ll be taken through the big S passage, which is the most impressive of the route. Admire this magnificent natural setting in the heart of the Hérault gorges. The majestic cliffs will give you a feeling of well-being and calm.

You will continue your descent by canoe via the small S and the piquet. You will then arrive at the suspension bridge of Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois which marks the end of the course. You can refresh yourself and stop whenever you want and rest at the many swimming spots. Take the opportunity to picnic and enjoy the warmth of the Occitan sun.

This itinerary is accessible to beginners and children from 11 years old. The more difficult passages are within the reach of all. However, it is imperative to be able to swim at least 25 metres and to be able to immerse yourself. The team at the bureau des guides provides all the equipment necessary for the activity to run smoothly: helmets, paddles, boats, life jackets and waterproof containers.

Participants will simply need to wear a swimsuit and closed shoes suitable for the activity. You may also want to pack a lunch or snack if you want to take a break during your day.

Driving directions

From Ganges, take the direction of Saint Bauzille de Putois, then turn right towards Brissac at the last roundabout before leaving the village. Before the bridge, turn left and park in the car park where the “Canoë le Moulin – Pont suspendu” base is located.

From Anduze, go to Durfort, Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, Montoulieu and Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois, then left towards Montpellier, then right towards Brissac at the last roundabout before leaving the village. Before the bridge, turn left and park in the car park where the “Canoë le Moulin – Pont suspendu” base is located.

From Montpellier, follow Saint-Gély-du-Fesc, Saint-Martin-de-Londres, Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois. As you enter the village, turn left at the first roundabout towards Brissac. Before the bridge, turn left and park in the car park where the “Canoë le Moulin – Pont suspendu” base is located.

What to do around

In the vicinity of your canoeing trip, you can explore the Cévennes region and discover the typical villages. Pass through Ganges, Sumène or Notre-Dame-de-Londres. You will be seduced by the authentic charm of these small towns. You will love the gentle way of life and the excellent local products.

Another must-see? Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, a medieval village classified as one of the most beautiful in France. Visit the Gellone Abbey, a masterpiece of Romanesque art in the Languedoc, and walk through the steep streets.

Continue your journey south to Saint-Martin-de-Londres, a village in the heart of the garrigues and only a few kilometres from Pic Saint-Loup. Walk inside the ramparts, admire the marvellous stone arches and its church.

A 30 minutes’ drive away, reach Montpellier, and add a city day to your stay. This famous city of the Hérault region welcomes you in a light and peaceful atmosphere. Choose the activities you like: cultural visits, shopping, strolling in the city centre, lively and trendy evenings, etc. You won’t have time to get bored!

Nearby, you can also relax on the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean coast: Palavas-les-Flots, Sète, Agde, la Grande-Motte. Take your pick!
